Nurturing Digital Skills & Public Speaking: Empowering Sustainability Leaders

Dear District Nodal Officers and School Nodal Teachers,

As the vibrant learning journey progresses, with 461 schools onboard from all 23 Districts of the Punjab State, we are approaching our 8th week. Our focus will now be on refining presentation and public speaking skills. We aim to empower our students to become sustainability leaders through hands-on activities, learning to make effective presentations, and speaking on public forums. I hope all students are learning to create digital presentations. I have seen some presentations themed on littering in neighborhood parks, food wastage, plastic piles near home, and using a 2-bin system, among many others. Some Schools are much ahead, and some are taking their time. Flexibility is required for this large-scale program execution. Therefore, even schools at the community outreach stage need not worry. Learning is most important.

For digital presentations, students must collaborate in peer groups; 2-3 students create concise presentations based on their assignments, stories, or artwork. They can refine their original work. I must also give feedback on the presentations, which I hope the SNOs will guide the students.

a.    Keep the content on your slides concise and use bullet points

b.    One idea per slide

c.    Use big and readable fonts to highlight important points

d.    Avoid clutter: make sure you don't have too many things on the same slide

e.    Rely on pictures/charts/graphs to communicate

Simultaneously, I have prepared an online session on public speaking, available at: https://youtu.be/whMPzQMncFM. School Nodal Teachers are requested to organize this session, play this video, and answer the students' queries.

Meanwhile, the district nodal officers have some tasks to accomplish.

1.    Printing of certificates: Every school nodal teacher must convey the number of certificates required for the participating students to the DNO, keeping a few spare ones. Also, certificates must be printed for the community facilitators, the School nodal teachers, and the District Nodal teachers. The formats have already been prepared by Dr. Puran Singh, the Director, Clean Indian Mission from PMIDC, and our program guide to the State Nodal Officer.

Specifications: 210 x 297 mm size certificate

250-300 GSM; Standard paper non-textured

2. The DNOs must upload their district data to the provided Google Drive.

3. Districts can prepare their work's cumulative activity video/ presentation, and I'll happily post it on the YouTube channel. Please share the drive link pn email sustainableleadesrproram@gmail.com

4. SNTs to organize Public speaking sessions, which will also be the valedictory session, giving away prizes to the best-performing students of the school (up to 10)

All DNOs and SNTs, please review this blog from last year to understand how the valedictory session will be conducted. Ms. Preeti Bansal +919501014964, previous year, Mohali's DNO, may be personally contacted for any guidance.

On my part, I have succeeded in raising sponsorship to give books, a sci-fi thriller worth Rs 350/-, to the best-performing students, along with keeping a copy for the school library. I've been able to manage 2800 books. Therefore, six books will be given to each school. 1-2 can be kept for the school library, and 4-5 books can be given in prizes to students. Schools can decide for themselves. We have 800 books ready to be delivered. The State Nodal Officer, Ms Surekha, can be approached for full or partial delivery to the fast-paced districts. The other 2000 books are expected about 13th Dec. Accordingly, the valedictory sessions can be organized. Also, I would request the District Education Officers, the School Principals, and the Urban Local Body Officers be approached to preside over and give away the certificates and prizes for the valediction. In any case, schools should plan their valediction function before the start of winter vacations.

5. School assessments: School assessments need to be carried out by making a district-level team draw a table to access school performance based on students' performances, community initiatives, and school infrastructure on waste management and green belt. I'm sharing the blog with details of last year's job done for Mohali for your reference.

6. District-level function: After the school activities are over, we'll have to organize a district function to be chaired by the District Commissioner, the ULB Head, or the District Education Officer to give away awards to the best-performing schools and honor the School Nodal Teachers. Then, I would request the School Principals to receive the honors. The trophies for the same also need to be prepared.

7. Best Districts: We'll talk about this later 😊

Best regards,

Suhani Sharma
