Impact Chronicles: Sustainability Leaders Program (SLP) India
Year 2024
In August 2024, the State Government of Punjab, in collaboration with the Department of Local Government (Urban Local Bodies, ULBs) and the Department of School Education, expanded the Sustainability Leaders Program (SLP) across all 23 districts of Punjab. The program has now been introduced in all 166 urban local bodies (ULBs) or city governments of the state. Twenty schools from each district were selected, with 50 to 60 students from each school participating in the program.

As of 30th Sep, 2024, 25,218 students have registered on the program website. To ensure seamless inter-departmental coordination, a WhatsApp group involving school nodal officers, community facilitators from ULBs, National Social Service (NSS) volunteers, student leaders, and IT managers has been created. An orientation session was held in September with all field functionaries, and the program officially launched on 1st Oct 2024.

Year 2023

In 2023, the Mohali District Environment Committee launched the Sustainability Leaders Program in partnership with the Municipal Corporation (ULB) Mohali and the District Education Department. Over 1,200 high school students enrolled as program interns through the program's official website. The 8-week internship, from August to November 2023, included webinars, field visits to observe solid waste management and interactions with key stakeholders.
Students engaged in a variety of skill-building activities, with an emphasis on waste segregation at source, such as critical thinking assignments, storytelling, creative writing, poster creation, and PowerPoint presentation workshops. They also had the opportunity to enhance their public speaking skills by presenting their work to a large audience.
