Field Trip Adventures: An Immersive Learning in Sustainability

Updated: Nov 24, 2023

The Sustainability Leaders Program strived towards environmental education with field trips organised by the Municipal Corporation Mohali, Punjab, hosting over 1100 enthusiastic students from various schools. Throughout September and October 2023, 50 students from each participating Government School embarked on a transformative journey to sites including the Resource Management Centre in Phase 3A, the Cow Pound Phase 1, and the Horticulture waste management site at the Nature Park.

The experience was not just an outing but a hands-on immersion into sustainable practices, aiming to instil key learning outcomes:

• Understanding the process of composting and its significance in managing household wet waste.

• Observing and learning the vital aspect of segregating waste at its source for efficient management.

• Educating students about the importance of home composting and the dangers associated with single-use plastics.

• Understanding the process of creating bales from multilayered plastics, emphasising waste management strategies.

• Exploring alternative, eco-friendly options for traditional practices: At Gaushala, the students saw the making of EcoLogs from Cow Dung and shredded coconut waste as a Substitute for Firewood at Cremation Grounds. Also, they saw the demonstrations of the art of creating decorative diyas and pottery items from cow dung, promoting recycling and sustainable craft.

Finally, the students actively participated by taking the Swachhta Pledge, affirming their commitment to cleanliness and sustainable practices.

Upon returning to their homes and schools, it's truly uplifting to witness students actively engaging in hands-on activities such as crafting cow dung logs and diyas, embracing home composting, and applying it in their kitchen gardens
