Updated: Oct 14

Punjab, Empowering 28,000 Students for a Cleaner Future

After two months of inter-departmental coordination between the School Education Department and the Department of Local Government, along with engaging National Social Service Volunteers as mentors, and completing school enrolments and student registrations, the 8-week Sustainability Leaders Program 2024 for high school students has officially launched in Punjab! This unique 8-week internship program, which focuses on raising awareness about cleanliness and waste segregation at the source, involves 2 hours of activity per week.

Over the past two weeks, over 28,000 students from 461 schools have registered online for the program. Additionally, 129 community facilitators and an equal number of community motivators from 166 Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) actively participate, covering all 23 districts of Punjab.

As part of celebrating the ongoing National campaign on cleanliness Swachhta Pakhwada, the program was officially launched today. We conducted our first-week webinar that introduced students to the the critical importance of waste segregation at source. Today's webinar was moderated by Ms. Surekha Thakur, Assistant Project Director of SAMAGRA and State Nodal Officer for SLP 2024. I delivered the opening presentation, outlining the program structure and solid waste management principles.

My 30-minute presentation was followed by insightful talks from Ms. Ginni Duggal, District Education Officer of SAS Nagar (Mohali), and Ms. Preeti Bansal, District Nodal Officer for SLP 2023 Mohali, who shared their experiences from last year’s program. Dr. Puran Singh, the State Project Director for the Clean India Mission (Urban), concluded the webinar by emphasizing the importance of waste segregation at source and inspiring students to become sustainability ambassadors in their communities.

The Sustainability Leaders Program was successfully piloted last year in Mohali, where 1,200 students participated. This year's program builds on that success and includes comprehensive resources, registration links, blogs, and past activities on the program website. District Nodal officers have shared pictures of the webinars conducted across the 461 schools and soon shall put the pictures on the website under Students work.
